Book Review
Every Summer Counts, No Matter How Many Pass
How long is too long if it is meant to be? Sometimes love has no expiration date no matter how hard we try to get rid of it.
I recently read the book, “Every Summer After” written by Carley Fortune. This is a fictional romance novel written through the eyes of a girl in two alternating timelines. This book has a direct focus on friendship and how love starts to tie into that as you grow. Friendship is a very important part of a relationship, and this book demonstrates this. It also shows how things take time, and you might not always get it perfect on your first try.
Every Summer After begins with this young girl named Persephone or Percy for short. She is an only child who grew up in the city in Canada. One day when she was 13 her parents decided it would be a good idea to buy a cottage 4 hours away in a small town on a lake. This is where the story mainly takes place. Shortly after arriving she comes to realize her neighbors are two young boys just about her age. Charlie, the older brother and Sam, the same age as her. The story begins to progress through the summers as the three grow up. Slowly after becoming best friends Sam and Percy begin to fall in love as one would expect. Every summer was perfect for them growing up, hanging out everyday and always being around each other. Percy’s family even started to come back to the cottage on holidays throughout the winter months. Everything was perfect until one Thanksgiving weekend when Sam and Percy were 18. Everything turned completely upside down after that. From that weekend on twelve years passed before words were ever spoken between the two of them again. After the news of Sam and Charlie’s moms passing, Percy decided to make her way back to the cottage. In just a short weekend, she would either decide if she completely ruined everything or saved everything by coming back. The story that this book leads you through is very interesting and entertaining. At times it seems almost predictable, but there are always unexpected turns not far ahead.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book. It is right up my alley and very similar to the other stories I choose to read. I would recommend this book to those who like a simple romance novel. It could be good for an easy read or to take to the beach, or just to read when you are bored. I think I would rate this book a ⅘ stars. It was very well written and had a good story, but at times I got a little bored and slowly predicted the ending.
