Interviewing the one and only Mr. Huizing
Mr. Huizing’s Interview
Today I decided to interview Mr. Huizing. Though, I have yet to have an actual class with him, he is very present throughout my week in Mrs. Hodge’s Books and Blogs class. He is a very energetic history teacher here at Rockford High school, and is constantly all over the place. I decided to interview him to learn about his life and experiences as a teacher of 17 years here.
Questions and Answers
What made you decide to become a teacher
Answer: “First off, my mother was a teacher for 36 years here. Some of my fondest experiences in school were in high school with my classmates and with my teachers. I really just wanted to continue to be in that type of setting when I grew up so I went into education.”
What is your favorite part of being a young teacher and closer in age to us than most teachers in this building?
Answer: “I am not very young anymore, turn 43 this year, got multiple gray hairs in my beard. But I do like to think I am still young at heart. I enjoy watching the kids work, their successes and failures. I like to build relationships with the kids, I think that is something I am good at you know, outside of the content. And that just kind of keeps me young and in the know.”
What is something you really want to do or somewhere you would like to go?
Answer: “I just want to keep watching my two kids grow up, I love watching them compete and just try things that are hard. I just really want to watch them grow and see where they go. But as far as me, I love to travel. I’m a big camper with my family and I, so I just want to keep traveling and seeing this world.”
How do you think others would describe you?
Answer: “Loud. Passionate about whatever I’m teaching or doing, I hope to always bring a lot of energy to the classroom.”
What is your best piece of advice for the future after graduation?
Answer: “Be open. Don’t have blinders on, this world is a great big place and you know you have lived in Rockford for 18 years of your life, there is a lot to see and hear and do out there. So be open to opportunities and experiences.
Closing
After being able to spend some time learning about Mr. Huizing and his life, I would say that he has lots to teach and show this world. He is a very nice and genuine person that only wants the best for everyone around him. It definitely makes sense as to why he is such a great teacher and overall person.
Takeaway #1: My first takeaway from Mr. Huizing is that being passionate about something can make you enjoy what you are doing that much more, and lead you down the road you wish to be going down.
Takeaway #2: My second takeaway is that we need to enjoy what we do and always be open to the new opportunities that are presented to us in our life. Don’t be afraid and shut things down fast just because it seems scary or new.
